Winner of Inaugural Architecture Drawing Prize AnnouncedOct 30, 2017 5:31 am39Momento Mori: a Peckham Hospice Care Home by Jerome Xin Hao Ng is the winner of the inaugural Architecture Drawing Prize curated by Make Architects, Sir John Soane's Museum and the World Architecture Festival.Jeremy Melvin, Curator of World Architecture Festival (WAF), heralded the drawing as "a superbly conceived and executed perspectival view looking down through the building from roof level, praised for its technical skill and the sensitivity with which it depicted the spaces found in such institutions as settings for multi-generation social interaction." It was produced as part of Ng's final diploma project at The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London. As winner of the category for Hybrid images, Ng's drawing was selected for the top prize over the winners of the other two categories: Christopher Wijatno's Deepwater Purgatory in the Digital category; and Dimitrios Grozopoulis' Scenarios for a Post-Crisis Landscape from the Hand-drawn category.Wijatno depicted a prison moored like an oil rig in deep water, which judges felt evoked Piranesi and Dante. Grozopoulis' drawing was commended by judges as having a haunting quality beyond that of most images of post-industrial landscapes, portrayed with an extraordinary control of line. The Architecture Drawing Prize was judged by artists Ben Langlands and Nikki Bell; Narinder Singh Sagoo, Head of Design Communication at Foster and Partners; Ken Shuttleworth of Make Architects; Owen Hopkins of the Sir John Soane's Museum; and Jeremy Melvin of the World Architecture Festival. The Prize received 166 entries across the three categories. In addition to the winners the judges gave two commendations and selected another six for display in the digital category. The judges also awarded five commendations and picked a further six of the hand-drawn entries to shortlist for display at WAF, and in the hybrid category made three commendations with another seven shortlisted entries chosen for display at WAF.The winning and shortlisted entries will then be exhibited at Sir John Soane's Museum in London from February 21 to April 14, 2018.
