Norman Foster and Arup
Florence High-Speed Train Station
14-06-2004
A huge glass roof supported by a light steel structure characterises the new "High Speed" station to be built in Florence to plans by London architect Norman Foster and Ove Arup.
The structure, which will require an investment of 240 million euros, will form the core of a new railway system extending as far as Santa Maria Novella Station.
The project won a competition held by TAV in March 2003, selected out of 10 finalists for its architectural quality, functionality and expected cost and operating requirements.
This will be the first major contemporary architecture project in Florence for many years, and is a part of one of the most important public infrastructure projects underway in Italy: the high-speed railway line.
